Researchers Demonstrate Fractal Light from Lasers

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Jan. 31, 2019 — A team from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and the University of Glasgow has demonstrated that fractal light can be created from a laser, verifying a prediction made two decades ago. The researchers provide experimental evidence for fractal light from simple lasers and add a new prediction, namely that the fractal light should exist in 3D and not just 2D, as previously thought. Glossary
    fractals
A method used to generate graphics within a computer system. Rather than dots or lines, fractal graphics work with mathematical formulas that represent the natural curves of the object.
    structured light
The projection of a plane or grid pattern of light onto an object. It can be used for the determination of three-dimensional characteristics of the object from the observed deflections that result.
