Researchers Unlock Light-Matter Interactions on Subnanometer Scales

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., Nov. 22, 2022 — Researchers at Purdue University have discovered waves with picometer-scale spatial variations of electromagnetic fields that can propagate in semiconductors like silicon. The findings demonstrate that natural media host a variety of light-matter interaction phenomena at the atomistic level. The use of picophotonic waves in semiconducting materials may lead researchers to design new, functional, optical devices, allowing for applications in quantum technologies. This figure demonstrates picophotonics in the 3D lattice of silicon atoms. The red wave represents the conventional...Read full article

    nanophotonics
Nanophotonics is a branch of science and technology that explores the behavior of light on the nanometer scale, typically at dimensions smaller than the wavelength of light. It involves the study and manipulation of light using nanoscale structures and materials, often at dimensions comparable to or smaller than the wavelength of the light being manipulated. Aspects and applications of nanophotonics include: Nanoscale optical components: Nanophotonics involves the design and fabrication of...
