Resolution of Fluorescing Microscope Reaches 15nm

GÖTTINGEN, Germany, Aug. 22, 2006 -- Scientists have used a new trick involving fluorescent dyes to surpass their own STED (stimulated emission depletion) microscope resolution records set in April and further distance themselves from limits imposed by Abbe's Law. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen said they have further opened the door to the nanocosmos of the cell by improving the resolution of STED microscopes to 15 nm, or 12 times sharper than a conventional microscope.     beam
    1. A bundle of light rays that may be parallel, converging or diverging. 2. A concentrated, unidirectional stream of particles. 3. A concentrated, unidirectional flow of electromagnetic waves.
    cell
    1. A single unit in a device for changing radiant energy to electrical energy or for controlling current flow in a circuit. 2. A single unit in a device whose resistance varies with radiant energy. 3. A single unit of a battery, primary or secondary, for converting chemical energy into electrical energy. 4. A simple unit of storage in a computer. 5. A limited region of space. 6. Part of a lens barrel holding one or more lenses.
    microscope
    An instrument consisting essentially of a tube 160 mm long, with an objective lens at the distant end and an eyepiece at the near end. The objective forms a real aerial image of the object in the focal plane of the eyepiece where it is observed by the eye. The overall magnifying power is equal to the linear magnification of the objective multiplied by the magnifying power of the eyepiece.     resolution
    1. In optics, the ability of a lens system to reproduce the points, lines and surfaces in an object as separate entities in the image. 2.     sharp
    A term used to describe a convex surface having too short a radius of curvature. To correct this condition, material is cut from the outer portion of the polishing tool.

    Electromagnetic energy is transmitted in the form of a sinusoidal wave. The wavelength is the physical distance covered by one cycle of this wave; it is inversely proportional to frequency.
