CORVALLIS, Ore., Jan. 12, 2021 — A retinomorphic optical sensor, featuring an ultrathin perovskite semiconductor layering, has demonstrated the ability to perceive changes to its visual field in much the same way as the human eye. The technology relies on ultrathin layers of perovskite semiconductors that, when exposed to light, change from strong electric insulators to strong conductors. The sensor’s ability to mimic the eye makes it potentially amenable to the types of neuromorphic computers apt to power AI in self-driving cars and other advanced image recognition applications, said John Labram, a researcher at...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESDeep Neural Network Guides Drone to Smooth LandingResearchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have collaborated on a system that uses a deep neural network (DNN) to help autonomous drones “learn” how to land more...Vision Spectra Autumn 2019 IssueRobot Uses AI and Imaging to Draw BloodRutgers University engineers have created a tabletop device that combines a robot, artificial intelligence, and near-infrared and ultrasound imaging to draw blood or insert catheters to deliver...Photonics.com 3/9/2020AI-Based Portable App Could Help Growers Prevent Production LossesDeep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and transfer learning are being applied to just-in-time crop disease detection, through a smartphone tool that scans banana plants for signs of disease and...Vision Spectra Winter 2019 IssueAI-Powered Robot Could Improve Productivity, Reduce Defects in Optics ManufacturingA robotics technology startup from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore), has introduced a new robot that can pick up delicate optical lenses and mirrors with care and...Photonics.com 10/11/2019PRODUCTSNanosecond Solid-State LaserThe compact MOPA series of UV nanosecond solid-state lasers from Crystal Laser Systems GmbH feature wavelengths of 355, 266, and 213 nm. This is true for charge-coupled devices (CCDs) and thermal cameras used in machine vision applications where an object's shape, location and orientation vary. Often the culprit is the detector array. If we were to estimate the output of a CCD or thermal camera, we would typically draw an image over the detectors, aligning the image with the detector axes. We show it this way because it’s...Photonics HandbookAcousto-Optic Devices: Charts showing the characteristics of acousto-optic scanning devices, acousto-optic figures of merit, and solutions for common problems with acousto-optic processor devices.ACOUSTO-OPTIC SCANNING DEVICES: CHARACTERISTICS MODULATORS Material Bandwidth (MHz) Rise Time (ns) Acousto Input Power (W) (Saturation) Material Wavelength Range...Photonics HandbookAdaptive Optics: Taming Atmospheric Turbulence: For more than three centuries, the Earth’s atmosphere has frustrated astronomers. The layer of gases that we breathe also distorts the images formed by telescopes. This means that conventional telescopes of more than a few centimeters in diameter cannot reach the resolution limit set by their optics. To Isaac Newton the problem was clear, and in 1704 he realized the effects of atmospheric turbulence on image formation. Just as heat waves shimmering above a hot patch of ground can distort our...Photonics HandbookRules of ThumbPhotonics Rules of Thumb Scientists and engineers tend to want to answer simple relational questions with a blackboard covered with equations, even when questioners just want a rough estimate to...Photonics HandbookWHITEPAPERSMachine Vision Lens for Wafer, Food InspectionMyutron offers SWIR telecentric lenses suitable for wafer and food inspection.
