Much like fishermen wear polarized sunglasses to see past the reflective glare of the water’s surface to spot their sport, astronomers use polarized filters in telescopes to isolate the reflected light of accretion disks, or gas formations that surround black holes. The friction from the spiraling within an accretion disk causes matter to heat and produce light in all wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum, creating what is sometimes referred to as an optical “mess.” While most of the light from the accretion disk is direct light (unpolarized), a small amount of that light is...Read full article

    Glossary
    astronomy
The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
    electromagnetic spectrum
The total range of wavelengths, extending from the shortest to the longest wavelength or conversely, that can be generated physically. This range of electromagnetic wavelengths extends practically from zero to infinity and includes the visible portion of the spectrum known as light.
