BUFFALO, N.Y., Jan. 13, 2021 — University at Buffalo researchers have developed a chemical sensing chip that boasts a range of potential applications, from the detection of illicit substances and dangerous materials, to counterfeit prevention. The chip, which relies on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), supports incorporation into hand-held sensor devices and approached quantum-limit sensing capabilities — a challenge for many conventional SERS chips — in testing. Qiaocqiang Gan, a professor of electrical engineering, led the team that introduced the chip. The team’s work builds on a...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESPotential of Periodic Array System Supports Nanophotonics ApplicationsA research team from the University of New Mexico (UNM) and the Autonomous University of Madrid has applied periodic arrays containing nanoparticles of different sizes — as opposed to more...Photonics Spectra November 2020 IssueNew Ceramic Nanocomposite Demonstrates High IR Transmittance, Thermal StabilityA research team that includes scientists from Russia, Ukraine, and China has developed a Y2O3-MgO fine-grained composite ceramic material that transmits over 70% of light in the infrared (IR) range...Photonics.com 12/27/2019Color Superlensing Could Break Through Diffraction BarrierResearcher Sergey Kharinstev and his team at Kazan Federal University recently published a paper in Optics Letters where they detail the design of a new type of metalens capable of imaging beyond the...Photonics Spectra April 2020 IssueRaman Holography Has Implications for Live Cell, Tissue InterrogationResearchers from the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) have successfully demonstrated holographic Raman microscopy. A typical optical delay line consists of a retroreflector or folding mirrors on...Photonics HandbookOptical Materials: Double-Sided Lapping and Polishing: Double-sided lapping and polishing utilizes planetary action with the combination of a top and bottom plate to precisely grind and polish precision, parallel optics.Double-sided processing is a batch-type process that uses planetary action — generally with loose, abrasive particles suspended in a liquid vehicle — to abrade material almost equally...Photonics HandbookAcousto-Optic Devices: Charts showing the characteristics of acousto-optic scanning devices, acousto-optic figures of merit, and solutions for common problems with acousto-optic processor devices.ACOUSTO-OPTIC SCANNING DEVICES: CHARACTERISTICS MODULATORS Material Bandwidth (MHz) Rise Time (ns) Acousto Input Power (W) (Saturation) Material Wavelength Range...Photonics HandbookGaussian and Newtonian Thin Lens Formulas: Four important equations from which the image distance and the lateral magnification can be computed for an object at any arbitrary distance from a thin lens.Equation (1) is known as the Gaussian form of the lens equation, after the mathematician Karl F.
