SPIE's board of directors named Eugene G. Arthurs as its executive director effective Nov. 1. He succeeds James E. Pearson, who resigned in February to become the executive director of the Instrument Society of America. Arthurs is a member of SPIE and chairman of the Optical Society of America's corporate associates activities committee. He was president of Cleveland Crystals Inc. in Ohio and founder and director of Andor Technology Ltd. in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He received his PhD in applied physics from Queens University in Belfast in 1972 and serves on the advisory board of the photochemical research center at Bowling Green University in Ohio.
