BUFFALO, N.Y., Feb. 14, 2019 — University at Buffalo (UB) researchers have received part of a $1.5 million grant to investigate light therapy as a replacement for prescription opioids in treating oral mucositis, painful ulcers, and swelling in the mouth that result from chemotherapy and radiation treatment for cancer. Funded by the National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research Small Business Innovation Research program, the grant will help the researchers determine the effectiveness of photobiomodulation in prevention and treatment of oral mucositis after cancer treatment. At a high power, light,...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESRed Light Optically Improves Mitochondrial Function in Aging EyesDeclining eyesight in humans was shown to improve when subjects looked at a deep red 670-nm light beam for three minutes a day for two weeks, according to a study led by researchers at University...Photonics.com 7/8/2020Photodynamic Therapy Can Help Treat Respiratory InfectionsPhotodynamic therapy can help combat secondary infections in COVID-19 patients, according to researchers at the Optics and Photonics Research Center (CEPOF), which is supported by the São...Photonics.com 8/11/2020Raman Spectroscopy and Machine Learning Team Up to Predict Immunotherapy Response in PatientsUsing Raman spectroscopy and machine learning, a team at Johns Hopkins University developed a noninvasive technique to assess how cancer patients will respond to immunotherapy. These articles will provide the tools optics designers need to tailor their designs to the appropriate manufacturing process and to optimize the cost of component fabrication.Aspheric surfaces are powerful tools that combine the optical corrections of multiple lenses into a single element (Figure 1) and affect performance in ways that spherical optics cannot. For example,...Photonics HandbookOptical Delay Lines: Key to Time-Resolved Measurements: To obtain an accurate means of creating reliable delays in any time-resolved spectroscopy or dynamic experiment, several factors about the delay line stage must be considered to reduce or eliminate errors associated with linear stages. One of the most critical elements of any time-resolved spectroscopy and dynamics experiment is the optical delay line. A typical optical delay line consists of a retroreflector or folding mirrors on...Photonics HandbookLasers: Understanding the Basics: Although lasers range from quantum-dot to football-field size and utilize materials from free electrons to solids, the underlying operating principles are always the same. This article provides the basic information about how and why lasers work.Over 60 years have passed since the first demonstration of a laser in 1960. After the initial spark of interest, lasers were for a while categorized as “a solution waiting for a problem,”...Photonics HandbookLight-Emitting Diodes: A Primer: Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are semiconductors that convert electrical energy into light energy. The color of the emitted light depends on the semiconductor material and composition, with LEDs generally classified into three wavelengths: ultraviolet, visible, and infrared. The wavelength range of commercially available LEDs with single-element output power of at least 5 mW is 275 to 950 nm. Each wavelength range is made from a specific semiconductor material family,...Photonics HandbookWHITEPAPERSSpectral Density Contrast in DPSS and ECD Lasers for Quantum and Other Narrow-linewidth ApplicationsWith current endeavours in the UK and around the world to foster the development of new Quantum-based technologies (QT) to sense and detect previously unreachable interactions, such as underground...Photonics.com 1/22/2021Light Changes Matter – with Optics, Lasers and SensorsJenoptik is a global OEM supplier of solutions and products based on photonics technologies with more than 25 years experience in the fields of optics, laser technology, digital imaging,...Photonics.com 12/2/2020High-Power TO-CanA high-power, continuous-wave, TO-Can package with single-mode power up to 600 mW and multimode power up to 3 W.Photonics.com 1/14/2021NLO/LASER CRYSTALSSolutions for Research, Development and ProductionPhotonics.com 1/11/2022WEBINARSPhotonics for OphthalmologyPhotonics Media invites you to join us for our upcoming FREE digital conference, "Photonics for Ophthalmology."
