Single Microendoscope Acquires Photoacoustic, Fluorescent Images

An endoscope that combines photoacoustic and fluorescence imaging and that is about as thick as a human hair could one day provide insight into the brain by enabling the simultaneous measurement of blood dynamics and neuronal activity. The researchers responsible for developing the device fabricated a prototype microendoscope that measured just 250 × 125 µm2, and used it to image fluorescent beads and blood cells using both imaging modalities. They successfully detected multiple 1-µm fluorescent beads and individual 6-µm red blood cells. “Combining these...Read full article

    Glossary
    photoacoustic imaging
Abbreviated PAI. An imaging modality with a hybrid technique based on the acoustic detection of optical absorption from endogenous chromophores or exogenous contrast agents. Light is absorbed by the chromophores and converted into transient heating, and through thermoelastic expansion there is a resulting emission of ultrasonic waves. In tissue, ultrasound scatters less than light, therefore PAI generates high-resolution images in the diffusive and optical ballistic regimes compared to purely...
    endoscope
An endoscope is a medical device used for visualizing and examining the interior of hollow organs, body cavities, or confined spaces within the body. It consists of a flexible or rigid tube equipped with an optical system and illumination sources, allowing healthcare professionals to observe internal structures, perform diagnostic procedures, and guide surgical interventions without the need for invasive surgery. endoscope suppliers → Key components and features of an...
    fluorescence
Fluorescence is a type of luminescence, which is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. Specifically, fluorescence involves the absorption of light at one wavelength and the subsequent re-emission of light at a longer wavelength. The emitted light occurs almost instantaneously and ceases when the excitation light source is removed. Key characteristics of fluorescence include: Excitation and emission wavelengths: Fluorescent materials...
