PROVIDENCE, R.I., Oct. 1, 2021 — The Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS) named Roy Goodacre this year’s Charles Mann Award winner for achievements in the field of applied Raman spectroscopy. The announcement was made at the SCIX 2021 conference in Providence, R.I., on Sept. 28. Goodacre, a professor of biological chemistry at the University of Liverpool, was recognized for his work in using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to allow the detection of single molecules. Roy Goodacre, winner of this year’s Charles Mann Award for achievements in the field of...Read full article

    raman spectroscopy
Raman spectroscopy is a technique used in analytical chemistry and physics to study vibrational, rotational, and other low-frequency modes in a system. Named after the Indian physicist Sir C.V. Raman who discovered the phenomenon in 1928, Raman spectroscopy provides information about molecular vibrations by measuring the inelastic scattering of monochromatic light. Here is a breakdown of the process: Incident light: A monochromatic (single wavelength) light, usually from a laser, is...
