Sticking Power of Gecko Feet Could Lead to Scientific Advances

AKRON, Ohio, Aug. 19 — The interest of University of Akron (UA) polymer researchers in the powerful surface sticking power of geckos soon could lead to advances in adhesives used in microelectronics, information technology, robotics and space applications. The leopard gecko (eublepharis macularius) is one of nature's own nanotechnologists. Thanks to nanoscale fibers in the soles of their feet, these colorful lizards can easily walk up walls, or even hang from the ceiling by one toe. Glossary
    adhesive
An intermolecular substance that serves to hold materials together. Two types are used in the optical industry: one, which must be transparent and colorless, to cement lenses together; and a general-purpose adhesive for bonding prisms and other glass parts to their metallic supports.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
