A blood vessel receptor that responds to light could aid more effective treatment of vascular diseases and other medical conditions. A team led by Johns Hopkins Medicine discovered the receptor, which causes blood vessels to relax in response to light. The researchers also found that blood vessel function can be regulated through changing light wavelengths. The researchers made the findings inadvertently when their blood-vessel-analysis equipment revealed tension in vessels after motion detection lights came on. “I had this slightly crazy idea,” said professor...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESMicroscopy Techniques Combine for Nanoscale Brain-Wide ImagingScientists from the Eric Betzig lab at Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Campus and the Ed Boyden Lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) collaborated to develop an imaging...BioPhotonics April 2019 IssueTechnique Interprets Hyperspectral Images Using Phasor ApproachAn imaging technique called spectrally encoded enhanced representations (SEER) provides greater clarity and works up to 67 times faster and at 2.7 times greater definition than existing spectral...BioPhotonics May/Jun 2020 IssueNIR Imaging System Could ID Hard-to-Detect Cancers EarlierAn optical imaging system developed by MIT researchers could enable physicians to identify tiny tumors deep within the body, leading to earlier detection and treatment of cancer. These articles will provide the tools optics designers need to tailor their designs to the appropriate manufacturing process and to optimize the cost of component fabrication.Aspheric surfaces are powerful tools that combine the optical corrections of multiple lenses into a single element (Figure 1) and affect performance in ways that spherical optics cannot. For example,...Photonics HandbookFluorescence Lifetime Imaging: Choosing the Best Approach: Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM), which measures the spatial distribution of the fluorescence decay, can be achieved either in the time or in the frequency domain. Each approach exhibits advantages and disadvantages, depending on the type of light detector and acquisition method employed. The term fluorescence is often applied as a synonym for photoluminescence, although luminescence actually covers fluorescence and phosphorescence. Both of these terms describe the process of...Photonics HandbookMachine Vision Cameras: Making the Right Selection: Improvements and affordability have broadened the use of vision systems for inspection, but several factors should be considered before making a purchase.Technological advances have resulted in new, higher-quality sensors that enable machine vision cameras to deliver greater features and functionality at a lower cost than ever before. These factors...Photonics HandbookDigital Cameras: Smaller Pixels for Higher Resolution: Reducing pixel size can increase a digital camera's performance. However, there are tradeoffs that need to be considered when going that route. In the search for ever-higher pixel counts for the digital still camera, it is clear that, if chip size remains constant, then “more pixels” means “smaller pixels.” The...Photonics HandbookWHITEPAPERSCamera-based Products - Benefits of an ISO13485:2016-Certified SupplierWhat advantages does a supplier certified according to the medical device standard ISO 13485:2016 offer to a manufacturer of camera-based medical products?
