Researchers in the lab of Federico Capasso at Harvard University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have developed a supermode optical resonator. The technology could have applications in telecommunications, laser technology, and fiber optics, among other areas. “This is an advance that alters in a fundamental way the design of resonators by using reflectors that convert light from one pattern to another as it bounces back and forth,” said Capasso, the Robert L. Wallace Professor of Applied Physics and Vinton Hayes Senior Research Fellow in electrical...Read full article

    Glossary
    resonator
A resonator is a device or system that exhibits resonance, which is a phenomenon that occurs when an external force or stimulus is applied at a specific frequency, causing the system to oscillate with increased amplitude. Resonators are found in various fields and can take different forms depending on the type of waves involved, such as mechanical waves, acoustic waves, electromagnetic waves, or optical waves. Key points about resonators: Resonance: Resonance is a condition where a...
    mode
    1. The characteristic of how light propagates through a waveguide that can be designated by a radiation pattern in a plane transverse to the direction of travel. 2. The state of an oscillating system such as a laser that corresponds to both a particular field pattern the system generates as well as one of the possible resonant frequencies of the system. In a laser system, the field pattern produced as described above is referred to as a transverse mode and takes the common name(s) Gaussian,...
    reflector
A type of conducting surface or material used to reflect radiant energy.
