SAN ANTONIO, March 5, 2020 — An ultraviolet spectrograph (UVS) designed and built by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is the first scientific instrument to be delivered for integration onto the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer (JUICE) spacecraft. Scheduled to launch in 2022 and arrive at Jupiter in 2030, JUICE will spend at least three years making detailed observations in the Jovian system. Aboard JUICE, UVS will get close-up views of the Jovian moons Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, all thought to host liquid water beneath their icy surfaces. UVS will record ultraviolet light...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESAdversarial Learning Techniques Test Image Detection SystemsEngineers at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) are finding and documenting vulnerabilities in machine learning algorithms that can make objects “invisible” to image detection systems...Vision Spectra Summer 2019 IssueRobotic Machine Vision Solution Can Process Shiny ObjectsA solution that enables industrial robots to scan and manipulate metallic objects that are too “shiny” for machine vision to process has been developed by Southwest Research Institute...Vision Spectra Summer 2019 IssueRobust Laser Technology Will Enable Satellite to Measure Greenhouse GasThe MERLIN satellite, a collaboration between DLR RfM in Germany and CNES in France, will use a radar-like laser system to measure the methane concentration in Earth’s atmosphere. A typical optical delay line consists of a retroreflector or folding mirrors on...Photonics HandbookAspheric Lenses: Design Considerations: This first of two articles will cover design and manufacturing options for aspheres; the second will include more detail on manufacturing and testing processes. These articles will provide the tools optics designers need to tailor their designs to the appropriate manufacturing process and to optimize the cost of component fabrication.Aspheric surfaces are powerful tools that combine the optical corrections of multiple lenses into a single element (Figure 1) and affect performance in ways that spherical optics cannot. For example,...Photonics HandbookAdaptive Optics: Taming Atmospheric Turbulence: For more than three centuries, the Earth’s atmosphere has frustrated astronomers. The layer of gases that we breathe also distorts the images formed by telescopes. This means that conventional telescopes of more than a few centimeters in diameter cannot reach the resolution limit set by their optics. To Isaac Newton the problem was clear, and in 1704 he realized the effects of atmospheric turbulence on image formation. Just as heat waves shimmering above a hot patch of ground can distort our...Photonics HandbookParticle Image Velocimetry: Basics, Developments and Techniques: New tools and techniques such as single-oscillator, double-pulsed lasers expand the applications for particle image velocimetry, particularly in aircraft design.Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is an experimental tool in fluid mechanics and aerodynamics.
