THz Technique is ‘All-Optical’

TROY, N.Y., July 26, 2010 — A team of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute researchers has opened the way for detecting hidden explosives, chemical and biological agents, and illegal drugs from a distance of 20 m using terahertz (THz) wave technology. The new, all-optical system has potential for homeland security and military uses because it can “see through” clothing and packaging materials and can identify immediately the unique THz “fingerprints” of any hidden materials. Terahertz waves, which occupy a large segment of the electromagnetic spectrum between the infrared and microwave...Read full article

    GLOSSARY
    fluorescence
The emission of light or other electromagnetic radiation of longer wavelengths by a substance as a result of the absorption of some other radiation of shorter wavelengths, provided the emission continues only as long as the stimulus producing it is maintained. In other words, fluorescence is the luminescence that persists for less than about 10-8 s after excitation.
