Tabletop Device Creates All Wavelengths in 1 Beam

ARLINGTON, Va., June 7, 2012 — More than 5000 low-energy photons have been converted into one high-energy x-ray photon. The coherent, directed light beam was generated for the first time using a device small enough to fit on a single laboratory table. “This is the broadest spectral-bandwidth, coherent-light source ever generated,” said Henry Kapteyn, an engineering and physics professor at JILA at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He led the study with JILA colleagues in collaboration with scientists from Cornell University, the University of Salamanca and Vienna University of Technology. “It...Read full article

    extreme ultraviolet
Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) refers to a specific range of electromagnetic radiation in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum. EUV radiation has wavelengths between 10 and 124 nanometers, which corresponds to frequencies in the range of approximately 2.5 petahertz to 30 exahertz. This range is shorter in wavelength and higher in frequency compared to the far-ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet regions. Key points about EUV include: Source: EUV radiation is produced by extremely hot and energized...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
