Terahertz Analysis Helps Target Measures for Controlling Pollution

A combination of terahertz (THz) absorption and 2D correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) has been used to identify the concentration and pollution sources of PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 µ in diameter) in the Beijing-Tianjing-Hebei region of China. The THz-2DCOS analysis revealed that samples with high PM2.5 were related to higher THz absorption at selected frequencies. This information was used to determine appropriate emergency measures needed to relieve haze pollution. This is a terahertz-2DCOS analysis of PM2.5 during red alert period (a) and normal condition (b). Courtesy...Read full article

The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
    terahertz
Terahertz (THz) refers to a unit of frequency in the electromagnetic spectrum, denoting waves with frequencies between 0.1 and 10 terahertz. One terahertz is equivalent to one trillion hertz, or cycles per second. The terahertz frequency range falls between the microwave and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Key points about terahertz include: Frequency range: The terahertz range spans from approximately 0.1 terahertz (100 gigahertz) to 10 terahertz. This corresponds to...
