CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 18, 2019 — Researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, and the U.S. Army have built a compact device able to produce a terahertz laser that can be tuned over a wide range. The device was built with commercial off-the-shelf parts and is designed to generate terahertz waves by spinning up the energy of molecules in nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas. With new information gained from novel computational techniques, the researchers were able to create a tunable terahertz laser “These gas lasers were for a long time seen as old...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESHarvard, MIT, Duke, US Army Team Up on Terahertz TechnologyResearchers have created a new terahertz radiation emitter with coveted frequency adjustment capability. From that beginning the laser has become an integral part of the conventional technology in many production plants. In the forefront of that revolution has been the CO2 laser, today a varied and sophisticated tool.In the three decades since its introduction, the CO2 laser has become the workhorse of industrial lasers. Today it is available in a range of designs and sizes with output powers of 20 kW and more....Photonics HandbookNd:YAG Lasers: Standing the Test of Time: The Nd:YAG laser crystal was developed not long after the discovery of the ruby laser in the 1960s. Of all the solid-state laser crystals, it has stood the test of time best. Its high gain, narrow linewidth, low threshold and physical properties make it a most versatile laser material for a variety of applications. The ubiquitous Nd:YAG laser has played many roles over the years. For the military, it has provided rangefinding and target designation capabilities. When used with nonlinear optics or as a pump...Photonics HandbookDiode-Pumped Lasers: Performance, Reliability Enhance Applications: The latest technology advances take diode-pumped solid-state lasers into new realms of power and wavelength, enabling many new applications.Neodymium-doped crystals and glasses such as Nd:YAG (neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet) have long been used as laser gain materials.
