Terahertz Microscopy Could Boost Performance of Perovskite

To better evaluate perovskite solar cell material(s), scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames National Laboratory developed a microscope that simultaneously images at the terahertz (THz) frequency and nanometer spatial scales. Through THz nanoimaging, the scientists uncovered unexpected information about methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite that could improve the material’s solar cell performance. MAPbI3 is of interest as a material that could potentially replace silicon in solar cells. THz light from the newly introduced probe scanning microscope...Read full article

    Glossary
    terahertz
Terahertz (THz) refers to a unit of frequency in the electromagnetic spectrum, denoting waves with frequencies between 0.1 and 10 terahertz. One terahertz is equivalent to one trillion hertz, or cycles per second. The terahertz frequency range falls between the microwave and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Key points about terahertz include: Frequency range: The terahertz range spans from approximately 0.1 terahertz (100 gigahertz) to 10 terahertz. This corresponds to...
    perovskite
The term perovskite refers to a specific crystal structure commonly found in various materials. Perovskite structures have a cubic arrangement of oxygen ions, forming a framework within which other cations (positively charged ions) are located. This crystal structure was named after the mineral perovskite, which has the chemical formula CaTiO3 and was first discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia. The general formula for the perovskite structure is ABX3, where: A represents a larger...
    photovoltaic
Photovoltaic (PV) refers to a technology that converts sunlight directly into electricity using semiconductors. The term "photovoltaic" is derived from the words "photo," meaning light, and "voltaic," referring to electricity, named after Alessandro Volta, a pioneer in the field of electricity. Key points about photovoltaic technology: Photovoltaic cells: The basic building block of photovoltaic technology is the photovoltaic cell, also known as a solar cell. These cells are made of...
