There’s Gold in Them Thar Windows

COVENTRY, England, April 8, 2011 — A new method for the preparation of ultrathin gold-based glass electrodes is being developed for organic solar cells. Because gold is considered an air-stable metal that is already widely used for interconnects, it will likely replace indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass, which has high surface roughness and a tendency to crack and become unstable. Whereas indium is in short supply, making it relatively expensive, gold can be recouped from the organic solar cell at the end of its life and is readily abundant. University of Warwick chemistry PhD student Helena Stec with some...Read full article

    indium tin oxide
A material widely used as a transparent conductive coating.
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
