Tielens Awarded Netherlands’ Highest Scientific Prize

LEIDEN, Netherlands, June 14, 2012 — Leiden University astronomer Xander Tielens has been awarded a €2.5 million (about $3.1 million) Spinoza prize, the highest scientific prize in the Netherlands, the university announced. Tielens, a professor of the physics and chemistry of interstellar space, was recognized for his contributions to research on interstellar dust and ice and on the effect of gas in so-called photodissociation regions, a process in which molecules disintegrate when they absorb photons. This effect is the result of radiation from nearby stars. He discovered that a significant proportion of interstellar...Read full article

    astronomy
The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
