Total Internal Reflection Interrogates Nanoparticles in
Microfluidic Chips

Whereas traditional methods for measuring nanoparticle dispersions involve time-consuming sample preparation and image analysis, a novel microfluidic device can characterize nanoparticle dispersions in real time. To do so, it employs an integrated diffraction grating operating under total internal reflection, a design conceived and developed by researchers from Technical University of Ilmenau in Germany, from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia and from the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava.     An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
