Two-Photon Microscopy Reveals Skin-Allergen Connection

GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Dec. 30, 2011 — Two-photon microscopy has shown that the skin absorbs various substances differently, depending on what they are mixed with. These differences may determine whether a substance causes contact allergy. “We have also been able to identify specific cells and proteins in the skin with which a contact allergen interacts,” said Carl Simonsson of the University of Gothenburg, where the skin research that formed his thesis took place. “The results increase our understanding of the mechanisms behind contact allergy.” Skin photographed in the two-photon microscope,...Read full article
