Optics giant Zeiss has elevated two employees to the highest level on its technical ladder. Dr. Michael Kempe and Dr. Michael Totzeck of Zeiss’ corporate research and technology division, are now two of three fellows within the company. Kempe, head of the technology area, has been working at Zeiss since 1999. He has been designated a fellow on the basis of his scientific knowledge in the area of microscope development and biomedical optics. Zeiss CEO Dr. Michael Kaschke called Kempe “one of the key players in shaping high-resolution microscopy at Zeiss.” ...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESMax Planck Florida Institute Becomes ZEISS '[email protected]' PartnerThe Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience (MPFI) and the Germany-based microscopy company ZEISS announced a “[email protected]” partnership agreement on Jan. 17. These articles will provide the tools optics designers need to tailor their designs to the appropriate manufacturing process and to optimize the cost of component fabrication.Aspheric surfaces are powerful tools that combine the optical corrections of multiple lenses into a single element (Figure 1) and affect performance in ways that spherical optics cannot. For example,...Photonics HandbookNanopositioning: A Step Ahead: It is almost a cliché among students of creativity that innovation occurs at the intersection of fields. Since nanopositioning is a discipline that has enabled swiftly evolving application arenas as diverse as materials science, genomics, photonics, defense, biophysics, and semiconductors, it’s unsurprising that its pace of innovation is nothing short of blistering in recent years.By its original definition, a nanopositioning device is a mechanism capable of repeatedly delivering motion in increments as small as one nanometer. Lately demands from industry and research have...Photonics HandbookImage Quality Testing: Camera Advances Push Improvements: An overview of state-of-the-art technology for image quality testing of mass-produced camera modules for consumer devices, including recent developments and new challenges.Image quality testing of complete cameras and assembled camera modules is standard in the optics industry. It is done by imaging a suitable target using the camera module under test and evaluating...Photonics HandbookFlat Optics: Considerations When Buying: To simplify the process when purchasing flat optics, we will discuss the top six factors from a manufacturer’s perspective, all of which affect the three major areas of the purchasing decision: quality, delivery and cost.Flat optics generally perform three main functions: They transmit light (windows), reflect light (mirrors) and fold light (prisms). While most optical manufacturers make spherical and flat optics, a...Photonics HandbookWHITEPAPERSFractional Pixel Method for Improved Pixel-Level Measurement and Correction (Demura) of High-Resolution DisplaysAs display resolutions increase, imaging systems are challenged to continue to provide accurate pixel-level measurements while applying increasingly limited relative imaging resolution during...Photonics.com 1/14/2021Custom vs. Off-the-Shelf Solutions: Are you dreaming big enough?Custom positioning solutions provide more leeway for innovation, and at far less cost, than many customers realize.
