MADISON, Wisc., Oct. 3 -- The University of Wisconsin-Madison Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) was awarded nearly $14.8 million by the National Science Foundation to continue its research, for the next six years, on the interfaces of materials at the nanoscale. The work could have applications in electronics and biology, including the use of atomic-scale materials to direct the growth and differentiation of embryonic stem cells, the university said. NSF-funded MRSECs are located at academic institutions throughout the US. UW Madison is one of 11 existing MRSECs to...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESNanostructures Advance Machine Vision Capabilities for Diverse ApplicationsResearchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Washington University in St. Louis, and OmniVision described approaches to image sensor production that used integrated nanostructured components...Photonics.com 8/1/2022Petawatt System Generates Gamma Rays for Industrial ApplicationsA project that aims to demonstrate the efficient generation of dense gamma-ray beams will include experiments that are expected to provide the first statistically relevant study of gamma-ray...Photonics.com 7/7/2022University of Michigan Awarded $18.5M for 3-PW ZEUS Laser, FacilityThe 3-petawatt (PW) ZEUS laser at the University of Michigan has been awarded $18.5 million by the NSF to establish it as a federally funded international user facility. The layer of gases that we breathe also distorts the images formed by telescopes. This means that conventional telescopes of more than a few centimeters in diameter cannot reach the resolution limit set by their optics. To Isaac Newton the problem was clear, and in 1704 he realized the effects of atmospheric turbulence on image formation. Just as heat waves shimmering above a hot patch of ground can distort our...Photonics HandbookDetectors: CCDs for Life-Science Applications: The CCD camera is becoming the imaging method of choice in biological laboratories for its resolution, versatility and ease of use. Choosing the best CCD for a given application, however, requires knowing how basic chip parameters affect performance.Since their invention in the late 1960s, charge-coupled devices, also called CCDs, have found widespread use in imaging applications. Electronic cameras based on CCD technology are used in...Photonics HandbookPhotometry: The Answer to How Light Is Perceived: Simply put, photometry is the measurement of visible light based on the response of the average human observer. How that definition translates into technically correct quantification methods is the focus of this article. That portion of the spectrum that the eye can see — and its rainbow of colors — is rather small, covering approximately 360 to 830 nm. What colors we perceive depends on wavelength, while...Photonics HandbookSemiconductor Lasers: An Overview of Commercial Devices: Within only a few decades, the semiconductor laser diode has evolved into a family of robust, reliable devices, with individual conversion efficiencies of better than 60 percent, continuous output powers of several kilowatts, modulation rates of several tens of gigahertz, and wavelengths from 0.4 to beyond 2 µm. This article discusses the structures and characteristics of the most common commercial varieties.Laser diodes vary widely in their wavelengths, powers, spectra and beam quality. Yet they share two fundamental components with all other lasers: an optical amplifier and a resonator that confines...Photonics HandbookWHITEPAPERSLight Changes Matter – with Optics, Lasers and SensorsJenoptik is a global OEM supplier of solutions and products based on photonics technologies with more than 25 years experience in the fields of optics, laser technology, digital imaging,...Photonics.com 12/2/2020Maximum Measurable Power for Photodiode DetectorPhotodiodes are one of the most common detectors used for measuring optical power of a light source.
