Ultrashort-Pulse Amplifier

EdgeWave GmbH has released the Innoslab ultrashort-pulse IS10I-A amplifier with an average power of 100 W. The device features a circular Gaussian beam with M2 <1.5, a line-shaped one-dimensional Top-Hat with M2 <2 and square two-dimensional Top-Hat with M2 <2. It delivers pulse energy up to 1 mJ, an input power of 2 W, a 100-W output power and an optical efficiency of 50 per cent. Applications include precision micromaterials processing, cutting, drilling and rapid tooling; ablation of thin metallic and dielectric layers; scribing of thin-film solar cells; and structuring of silicon...Read full article

    Glossary
    amplifier
A device that enlarges and strengthens a signal's output without significantly distorting its original waveshape. There are amplifiers for acoustical, optical and electronic signals.
    gaussian beam
A beam of light whose electrical field amplitude distribution is Gaussian. When such a beam is circular in cross section, the amplitude is E(r) = E(0) exp [-(r/w)2], where r is the distance from beam center and w is the radius at which the amplitude is 1/e of its value on the axis; w is called the beamwidth.
