Researchers from the Toyohashi University of Technology have developed a virtual walking system. The system records a person walking and then replays it to another user through the oscillating optic flow and synchronous foot vibrations. The proposed recording system captures the walker’s oscillating optic flow with a pair of stereo cameras, and records the timings of feet striking the ground using four microphones embedded in the walker’s shoes. The system comprises a large-field-of-view head-mounted display (HMD) and four vibrators attached to the heels and the forefeet. ...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESDisplay Resolution Increases by 3D-Printing Quantum Dot NanopixelsA display technology developed at the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) produces 3D pixels with nanoscale dimensions by 3D-printing quantum dots (QDs) embedded in polymer nanowires....Photonics.com 8/19/2020Microlens Avoids Cross-Phase Modulation, Allows Live-cell ImagingKing Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) researchers developed an ultrathin stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) lens that will simplify and improve the quality of molecular-level...BioPhotonics Jan/Feb 2021 IssueExtremely Bright Quantum Emitter Self-HealsA new approach to synthesizing quantum dots has significantly increased their use value, according to members of an international research collaboration. The layer of gases that we breathe also distorts the images formed by telescopes. This means that conventional telescopes of more than a few centimeters in diameter cannot reach the resolution limit set by their optics. To Isaac Newton the problem was clear, and in 1704 he realized the effects of atmospheric turbulence on image formation. Just as heat waves shimmering above a hot patch of ground can distort our...Photonics HandbookLaser Safety: Important Considerations: Laser safety is nothing to scoff at; lasers can be hazardous. Enter Class 1 laser products — lasers that are so safe that the user doesn’t require specific laser safety training or protective eyewear. Some precautions still exist, though. When purchasing an industrial laser system, the astute buyer will look for a Class 1 laser product — a system where the laser beam hazard is completely enclosed and there is no potential laser...Photonics HandbookWhat Is Photonics?: An overview and brief history of photonics technology and its applicationsPhotonics is the study of light and other types of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon.
