ESPOO, Finland, May 29, 2017 — The COMBO-CFB project led by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. has developed a new innovative concept to increase solar energy production in the energy system. According to its research, the concept can reduce fuel consumption and emissions stressing the climate by more than 33 percent. The concept is based on the combination of concentrated solar power (CSP) technology and a traditional power plant process into a hybrid plant which produces electricity on the basis of consumption. Research partners: VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the University of Oulu,...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESDNA Origami Supports Applications In and Beyond Life SciencesA European research team developed a dye- and DNA programming-based approach for counting molecules present within individual complexes. In particular, it’s necessary to determine how variations in process parameters affect end results, so that acceptable process input and operating ranges can be determined.Materials processing with lasers is actually a broad term for a diverse range of applications. The major categories of these uses, and the lasers that service them, are summarized Table 1. At one...Photonics HandbookFluorescence Lifetime Imaging: Choosing the Best Approach: Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM), which measures the spatial distribution of the fluorescence decay, can be achieved either in the time or in the frequency domain. Each approach exhibits advantages and disadvantages, depending on the type of light detector and acquisition method employed. The term fluorescence is often applied as a synonym for photoluminescence, although luminescence actually covers fluorescence and phosphorescence. Both of these terms describe the process of...Photonics HandbookLaser Safety: Important Considerations: Laser safety is nothing to scoff at; lasers can be hazardous. Enter Class 1 laser products — lasers that are so safe that the user doesn’t require specific laser safety training or protective eyewear. Some precautions still exist, though. When purchasing an industrial laser system, the astute buyer will look for a Class 1 laser product — a system where the laser beam hazard is completely enclosed and there is no potential laser...Photonics HandbookWEBINARSConcentrator Photovoltaics: Not Just Solar CellsAn efficiency of 46 percent has recently been achieved with four-junction solar cells under a concentration on the cell of 508 times the normal solar power flux on the Earth’s surface.
