SETi Gears Up for High-Volume UV LED Manufacturing

COLUMBIA, S.C., Oct. 26, 2011 — Sensor Electronic Technology Inc. (SETi) announced it has set in motion a plan to expand its R&D efforts and to transition its production line to high-volume manufacturing, making it the first high-volume supplier of ultraviolet LEDs shorter than 365 nm.

SETi, which in 2004 was the first company to market short-wavelength UV LEDs, initially will scale to supply quantities of more than 100 million LEDs per year.

It currently operates a 15,000-sq-ft ISO:9001 certified facility, where it runs a vertically integrated R&D and small-volume production line with epitaxial growth, chip fabrication, packing, and test and analysis as well as a prototyping line for the integration of its LEDs into complete systems.

Currently under way, the first phase of the expansion involves retrofitting the facility to 20,000 sq ft and converting it to the company’s R&D center. The expansion will be focused on creating additional cleanroom space for chip fab and device packaging.

In addition, the company recently closed on a new property, also in Columbia, where it will focus its high-volume manufacturing lines. It plans to expand the site to 130,000 sq ft. Initially, it will house proprietary production metallorganic chemical vapor deposition reactors.
