SPIE BiOS to Highlight System Design and Early Diagnostics

As part of SPIE Photonics West 2023, which will take place at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, the BiOS Expo will run the weekend of Jan. 28-29. The exhibition will include dozens of companies showcasing new photonic system components and the latest adaptations for optical technologies in medicine and the life sciences. BiOS Hot Topics sessions will cover image-guided autonomous robotic surgery, the latest illumination source to be utilized in optical coherence tomography, and several other innovations.

Sergio Fantini of Tufts University and Paola Taroni of Politecnico di Milano will chair the BiOS symposium. Jennifer Barton of the University Arizona and Wolfgang Drexler of the Medical University of Vienna will serve as symposium co-chairs.

“We’re very much looking forward to hosting SPIE Photonics West and BiOS in person again in January,” said Marilyn Gorsuch, SPIE’s senior director of technical programs. “We have terrific speakers lined up for our Hot Topics, neurotechnologies, and nano/biophotonics plenaries, and [we] are excited to add one more plenary session on AI/ML/DL [artificial intelligence/machine learning/deep learning] as tools for the biophotonics community.”

Barton and Drexler will facilitate the Hot Topics sessions, which will take place on Saturday. Other subjects to be featured include “Quantitative phase imaging and artificial intelligence,” “Nongenetic photoacoustic neural stimulation,” and “Early identification of life-threatening soft-tissue infection using dynamic fluorescence imaging.”

Application tracks

Sessions at the BiOS conference will be divided into the following six tracks:

Photonic Therapeutics and Diagnostics. Speakers will offer insights in areas such as endoscopic microscopy, photonics in dermatology and plastic surgery, and the mechanisms of photobiomodulation therapy. Brian Jet-Fei Wong of the Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic at the University of California, Irvine and Eva Sevick of the University of Texas Health Science Center will co-chair.

Neurophotonics, Neurosurgery, and Optogenetics. Topics include clinical and translational neurophotonics, neural imaging and sensing, and optogenetics and optical manipulation. Shy Shoham of New York University and Anna Devor of Boston University will co-chair.

Clinical Technologies and Systems. Presenters will discuss advanced biomedical and clinical diagnostic and surgical guidance systems, design for biomedical technologies, and biophotonics in exercise science, sports medicine, health monitoring technologies, and wearables. Tuan Vo-Dinh of Duke University and Anita Mahadevan-Jansen of Vanderbilt University will co-chair.

Tissue Optics, Laser-Tissue Interaction, and Tissue Engineering. In this session, presenters will address optical elastography and tissue biomechanics, biophotonics and immune responses, and the dynamics and fluctuations in biomedical photonics. E. Duco Jansen of Vanderbilt University and Jessica Ramella-Roman of Florida International University will co-chair.

Ohara Corp. - Optical Glass, Polish substrates 10-23
Biomedical Spectroscopy, Microscopy, and Imaging. This session will feature topics such as high-speed biomedical imaging and spectroscopy; adaptive optics and wavefront control for biological systems; and imaging, manipulation, and analysis of biomolecules, cells, and tissues. Ammasi Periasamy of the University of Virginia and Daniel Farkas of the University of Southern California will co-chair.

Nano/Biophotonics. On the program in this session will be talks related to nanoscale imaging, sensing, and actuation for biomedical applications; colloidal nanoparticles for biomedical applications; and plasmonics in biology and medicine. Paras Prasad of the University of Buffalo and Ewa Goldys of the University of New South Wales will co-chair.

Best paper awards

SPIE honors researchers and scientists each year who have produced groundbreaking research in areas ranging from multiphoton microscopy to health monitoring technology. The BiOS best paper awards are sponsored by Corning, TomoWave Laboratories, JenLab, PicoQuant, Prizmatix, and Ocean Insight.

The 15 award categories include Advanced Photonics in Urology; the Pascal Rol Award 2023 — Ophthalmic Technologies; Optical Biopsy; Multiscale Imaging and Spectroscopy; Microfluidics, BioMEMS, and Medical Microsystems; Biophotonics in Exercise Science, Sports Medicine, Health Monitoring Technologies, and Wearables; Photons Plus Ultrasound: Imaging and Sensing; Optical Elastography and Tissue Biomechanics; Polarized Light and Optical Angular Momentum for Biomedical Diagnostics; the JenLab Young Investigator Award — Multiphoton Microscopy in the Biomedical Sciences; the Student Poster Session Competition — Multiphoton Microscopy in the Biomedical Sciences; the PicoQuant Young Investigator Award — Single Molecule Spectroscopy and Superresolution Imaging; High-Speed Biomedical Imaging and Spectroscopy; the Prizmatix Young Investigator Awards — Nanoscale Imaging, Sensing, and Actuation for Biomedical Applications; and the Ocean Insight Young Investigator Award — Colloidal Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications.

BiOS Expo

The BiOS exhibition will include over 140 companies displaying their equipment, components, and systems for microscopic imaging, biosensors, and laser therapy.

This year’s show will feature companies such as Andor Technology, Applied Scientific Instrumentation, Coherent, Cyberdyne, DRS Daylight Solutions, Edmund Optics, Excelitas Technologies, Hamamatsu, HÜBNER Photonics, Lumedica, Lumencor, Mad City Labs, MKS Instruments, NKT Photonics, OZ Optics, Prior Scientific, Prospective Instruments, SCANLAB America, Teledyne Imaging, and TOPTICA Photonics. BioPhotonics magazine and Photonics Media will also have a booth at the expo.

“We are looking forward to connecting face to face with our photonics community and providing opportunities for networking and collaboration to support the world-class biophotonics research and applications, industry developments, and technology innovations that are presented at Photonics West and BiOS,” Gorsuch said.
