SPIE, Chinese Laser Press Will Launch Photonics Journal: Week in Brief - 01/21/22

BOLTON, Mass. — Headwall Photonics completed a recapitalization led by Arsenal Capital Partners, a private equity firm specializing in investments in industrial and health care companies. The recapitalization was completed in partnership with existing management and ownership, resulting in Arsenal becoming majority owner. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

TOKYO — Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corp. (TNSC) and North Carolina State University (NC State) established a three-year collaboration on methods and equipment solutions to enable advanced GaN-based optoelectronic, photonic, and electronic devices. NC State will use a TNSC SR2000 metal organic chemical vapor deposition reactor for its research and development with support and expertise from TNSC.

PUCHHEIM, Germany — TecInvest Holding AG, parent company of SCANLAB GmbH and Next Scan Technology BVBA, is realigning its organization in the polygon scanner segment; Next Scan Technology (NST) will be integrated into SCANLAB. Operating under the name SCANLAB BV, the team of developers in Belgium will focus exclusively on further development of polygon scanners.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Optical components and peripherals manufacturer APPLIED IMAGE was purchased by CEO and President Glenn Jackling. Jackling purchased the company from founder Bruno Glavich, who owned the company for 43 years. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Advanced Photonics Nexus, an open access journal co-published by SPIE and Chinese Laser Press (CLP), anticipates publication of its first issue in the second half of 2022. The journal will be accessible online in the SPIE Digital Library, as well as on CLP’s researching platform. The journal’s co-editors-in-chief are Xiao-Cong (Larry) Yuan of Shenzhen University; Anatoly Zayats of King’s College London; and Weibiao Chen, director of the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics. Research areas to be covered include imaging systems, metamaterials, nanophotonics, optical fibers, quantum optics, ultrafast optics, biophotonics, and lasers.

SAN DIEGO — Biotechnology company ONI closed a $75 million Series B financing. The round was led by ARCH Venture Partners and Casdin Capital, with participation from Section 32, ARTIS Ventures, Vertical Venture Partners, Axon Ventures, and private investors, including Paul Conley. Existing investors, including Oxford Science Enterprises, also participated in the round.
