SPIE Optics + Photonics Returns to San Diego with Comprehensive Program

A live exhibition will feature more than 100 participating companies; more than 2000 papers, posters, and presentations; and interactive networking sessions at SPIE Optics + Photonics, taking place Aug. 1-5 in San Diego. The five-day, in-person show will explore the latest advancements in optical engineering and applications, nanotechnology, quantum science, organic photonics, and astronomical instrumentation. 

Plenary talks, technical presentations, and course offerings (in-person and online) are available to attendees, as well as professional development opportunities. The SPIE Awards Celebration on Aug. 4 will also be included as part of this year’s show.

Live Exhibition and Networking Events

The 2021 exhibition is a marketplace for optical components, materials, devices, and more. Researchers and engineers are encouraged to connect with leading companies as they showcase the newest products and the latest technologies.

This year’s exhibition will be split across three show days (Aug. 3-5). Lasers, optical components, optical microscopes, and motors and drivers are just some of the product areas in which attending companies will display. More than 20 optics and photonics “company announcements” are included as part of this year’s Optics + Photonics show, including new product revelations, demonstrations, and project updates.

Also included as part of the exhibition portion of the show is a job fair. The job fair will run on Aug. 3, inviting job seekers to connect with potential employers. Job fair access is made available through attendees’ free exhibition registration.

Technical networking events to explore topics in depth and connect with colleagues range from panel presentations and workshops, to poster sessions and expert-facilitated talks. These sessions will be held each day of the show. Conference chairs and speakers will be among the hosts of these networking initiatives, which include the annual gathering of lens designers, chaired by Rich Pfisterer from Photon Engineering LLC, and a meeting of the X-Ray Optics Working Group, chaired by Ali Khounsary from Illinois Institute of Technology and Ladislav Pína from Czech Technical University.

Conferences and Symposia

Three symposia (Nanoscience + Engineering Applications, Organic Photonics + Electronics, and Optical Engineering + Applications) will offer 50 distinct conferences. Plenary sessions, delivered by leading innovators including Martin Linder, head of the Science Instrumentation Division at European Space Agency (Netherlands), Anita Ho-Baillie, from the University of Sydney, Franky So, from North Carolina State University, and Paul Hertz, from NASA, will span topics from astronomical optics and instrumentation, to advancements in nano- and metamaterials.

Topics in nanoscience and quantum sciences and technologies highlight the Nanoscience + Engineering Applications conference. Sessions covering plasmonics design and materials, optical trapping and micromanipulation, and emerging topics in artificial intelligence are included. The conference plenary will be delivered by Columbia University’s P. James Schuck, Northwestern University’s Teri Odom, and Duke University’s David Smith. The trio will present advancements in nonlinear optical responses of 2D materials and lanthanide-doped nanoparticles, nanoscale optics with plasmonic nanoparticle lattices, and engineering systems from metamaterial devices.

Perovskite photovoltaics, liquid crystals, sensors and bioelectronics, and molecular machines are among the topics of presentation in the Organic Photonics + Electronics conference. The conference will provide a comprehensive offering on organic-based materials and devices advancing renewable energy sources and other commercial applications. Two plenaries, from Cambridge University’s Richard Friend, the University of Arizona’s Jean-Luc Brédas, and Ho-Baillie and So, are at the front of the program.

Optical design, fabrication, and testing; optics and photonics for sustainable energy; and remote sensing and atmospheric propagation will be spotlighted in the Optical Engineering + Applications conference. The Astronomical Optics and Instrumentation plenary session, “Voyage 2050: An Outlook to the Next ESA Science Programme” from Linder, as well as plenaries in signal, image, and data processing, and x-ray, gamma ray, and particle technologies, round out the conference. A “Tribute to James C. Wyant: The Extraordinaire in Optical Metrology and Optics Education” is an included conference.
