SPIE Optics + Photonics to Host Cutting-Edge Technologies, Promote Industry Dialogue

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 15, 2022 — A program featuring over 2000 presentations and spanning five days awaits SPIE Optics + Photonics 2022 attendees. The multidisciplinary optical sciences and technology meeting will be held at the San Diego Convention Center Aug. 21-25. The three-day industry exhibition kicks off Aug. 23.

Optics + Photonics will deliver sessions in nearly 50 conference topics, and offer plenary talks, technical presentations, industry courses, professional development opportunities, and an onsite job fair.

Symposia, plenaries spotlight future-looking topics

Nanoscience, Organic Photonics, and Optical Engineering will feature as symposia topics, with 48 technical conferences scheduled under the umbrella of the symposia. Sessions will cover advancements in metamaterials, plasmonics, renewable energy sources, and photonic devices, as well as high-growth R&D areas including spintronics, optical trapping, molecular and nano machines, and EUV optics.

The “Emerging Topics in Artificial Intelligence” conference, chaired by a committee that includes Volker Sorger, director of the Devices and Intelligent Systems Laboratory at The George Washington University, and Aydogan Ozcan, the Chancellor’s Professor and the Volgenau Chair for Engineering Innovation at UCLA and a professor with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, will examine the confluence on AI and topics such as biomedicine, quantum metrology, and integrated photonics. Sorger will present “Batch processing and data streaming Fourier-based convolutional neural network accelerator.” Ozcan will contribute to eight presentations over the five-day conference.

Five plenaries will also be held, including an opening event Sunday evening, Aug. 21, to be led by Michael Berns* of the Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic, and Jun Ye from the University of Colorado. Two plenaries each will be held on the next two days, culminating in an optical engineering plenary Aug. 23. NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Lee Feinberg, the Webb’s NASA optical telescope element manager, will speak on the Webb’s development before hosting a Q&A session.

Company Spotlights invite dialogue

SPIE will host live, in-person industry events from Aug. 23-25, giving guests the chance to connect with leading companies from across the industry landscape. Beyond the job fair, “Company Spotlights” will place Edmund Optics, ASML, Meta, Thorlabs, GlobalFoundries, and more at the fore, as the companies make 15-minute pitches to prospective employees. A Q&A will follow each Company Spotlight.

Technical events include design workshops, panel discussions, and “An Optical Believe It or Not: Key Lessons Learned” session chaired by Synopsys Inc.’s Mark Kahan. Two space-themed technical events — a “Workshop on Solar Energy: Heliostats, Metrology Challenges, and Heliostat Consortium Funding Opportunities” and “Panel on Space Systems Contamination Control” — will include speakers from Boeing, the European Space Research and Technology Centre, and national labs in the U.S.

Multiday exhibition

More than 125 companies have confirmed their attendance as exhibitors. Exhibiting companies include Olympus, Physik Instrumente, SVS-Vistek GmbH, and Trioptics, as well as Hamamatsu and NKT Photonics. Confirmed exhibitors will be attending from France (ALPAO SAS); Latvia (Armadillo SIA); and the Czech Republic (Meopta - optika SRO), as well as multiple companies from Germany, China, and South Korea.

The diversity of exhibiting companies is reflected in the range of technologies to be showcased. New and enhanced commercial offerings in optical metrology, filters, cameras and imaging systems, lasers, and more will also be on display in the exhibition.
