Following more than a decade of consistent gains, graduate enrollments in science and engneering de- clined for a third straight year in 1996. That finding comes from a National Science Foundation brief.
The foundation's figures show that enrollment of women in graduate science and engineering rose consistently since 1980 and went up again by 1 percent in a 12-month period ending in the fall of 1996. At the same time, graduate enrollments of men dropped 3.3 percent between 1995 and 1996. Overall, the numbers fell by more than 20,000 from 1993 to 1996.
