Semrock Ships Millionth Filter

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Dec. 6, 2012 — Semrock Inc., a unit of Idex Corp., recently shipped its millionth hard-coated optical filter, the company announced Wednesday.

Founded in 2000, the company began applying its hard coating filter technology to the biotechnology and optical instrumentation in 2004. Since then, its three optical filter platforms — fluorescence instrumentation and microscopy, Raman spectroscopy instrumentation and laser-based analytical instrumentation — have seen significant growth, the company said.

“In the company’s early years, few of us dared to imagine we’d ship over a million of our hard-coated, high-performance optical filters,” said General Manager Robert Beeson.

Semrock is focusing its efforts now on the imminent completion of a new high-volume production cell so it can ship the next million filters in less time than it took to ship the first million, Beeson said.

GLOSSARY
optical filter
A device with characteristics of selective transmittance, capable of passing a certain part of the electromagnetic spectrum while being opaque to the other portions. Means of producing filters varies considerably. Color filters (for the visual) usually consist of glass, gelatin or plastic containing dyes or pigments. Band pass filters are found in signal processing and are commonly fabricated via electronics and complex circuitry and are designed to pass and reject parts of the spectrum based...
raman spectroscopy
That branch of spectroscopy concerned with Raman spectra and used to provide a means of studying pure rotational, pure vibrational and rotation-vibration energy changes in the ground level of molecules. Raman spectroscopy is dependent on the collision of incident light quanta with the molecule, inducing the molecule to undergo the change.
