Single Quantum and Qunnect Partner with CERN on Quantum Networking
Single Quantum, a Netherlands-based developer of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, and Qunnect, a quantum networking company, are collaborating with CERN’s Quantum Technology Initiative (QTI) to kick off its new quantum networking lab. CERN has integrated Single Quantum’s detectors with White Rabbit time-synchronization technology, achieving sub-nanosecond alignment of distant nodes. Qunnect’s rack-mountable quantum entanglement sources, meanwhile, have been deployed in CERN’s quantum networking lab.
QTI is a comprehensive R&D and academic collaboration program designed to meet the needs of CERN and the high-energy physics community. The CERN lab was recently created in the framework of the initiative.
CERN researchers used both detector and source hardware this summer to enable synchronized entanglement distribution and co-propagation tests of classical and quantum signals.
“We’re creating an open, neutral platform to accelerate quantum research through cross-disciplinary collaborations, exploiting synergies across academia and industry of the Member States,” said Amanda Diez Fernandez, responsible for coordinating partnerships for the QTI.
As collaborators, Single Quantum, Qunnect, and CERN QTI are exploring advanced metrology schemes, time-synched entanglement tests, as well as the co-propagation of classical and quantum channels in installed fiber at the CERN campus.

Glossary
- quantum
- The term quantum refers to the fundamental unit or discrete amount of a physical quantity involved in interactions at the atomic and subatomic scales. It originates from quantum theory, a branch of physics that emerged in the early 20th century to explain phenomena observed on very small scales, where classical physics fails to provide accurate explanations.
In the context of quantum theory, several key concepts are associated with the term quantum:
