PROVIDENCE, R.I., Oct. 1, 2021 — The Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS) named Roy Goodacre this year’s Charles Mann Award winner for achievements in the field of applied Raman spectroscopy. The announcement was made at the SCIX 2021 conference in Providence, R.I., on Sept. 28.

Goodacre, a professor of biological chemistry at the University of Liverpool, was recognized for his work in using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to allow the detection of single molecules.

GLOSSARY
raman spectroscopy
That branch of spectroscopy concerned with Raman spectra and used to provide a means of studying pure rotational, pure vibrational and rotation-vibration energy changes in the ground level of molecules. Raman spectroscopy is dependent on the collision of incident light quanta with the molecule, inducing the molecule to undergo the change.
molecular spectroscopy
Spectrum analysis concerned with the spectra formed by transitions in molecules.
