Telescope Looks for Dirty Skies

A 30-in. Beck telescope returned to Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga., after a 10-year hiatus. The instrument was originally installed at the college's observatory, but after pollution ended its star-gazing days, it was moved to a Georgia State University research facility in Atlanta in 1989.
Now, ironically, it has returned to Agnes Scott to study atmospheric pollution. Students and faculty from the college and Georgia Institute of Technology's Research Institute will team up on experiments in atmospheric physics and atmospheric chemistry. Agnes Scott lies beneath a major flight path for aircraft and provides a clear view of the Atlanta sky.
