WALTHAM, Mass., Dec. 15, 2006 -- Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., a maker of laboratory equipment and scientific instruments, today announced it has acquired Franklin, Mass.-based Cohesive Technologies Inc., a manufacturer of advanced sample extraction and liquid chromatography products. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Cohesive has annual revenues of approximately $15 million. Its products add in-line sample preparation capabilities coupled with mass spectrometry technology for drug and other organic molecule analyses. These new capabilities will "significantly improve sample throughput and increase detection limits during LC/MS/MS analysis for customers in the pharmaceutical, clinical, environmental and food science industries," Thermo Fisher Scientific said in a statement.

The chemical method of separating compounds dissolved in one phase (usually mobile) through its equilibration with a second phase (usually stationary). The mechanism of separation may involve partition, adsorption, permeation or exclusion, or ion exchange.
mass spectrometry
An instrumental technique that utilizes the mass-to-charge ratio of charged particles as recorded from a mass spectrometer in order to determine the mass of a particle as well as the chemical makeup, or elemental ionic composition of a given sample or molecule.
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
