Universal to Demonstrate 'Smart Windows'

Universal Display Corp. of Ewing, N.J., has entered into a $130,000 cooperative agreement with the US Department of Energy to develop "smart windows" for energy conservation in residential and commercial buildings. The devices will be based on Universal's transparent and phosphorescent organic LED technologies. Working with Princeton University of Princeton, N.J., the company will integrate the techniques with reflective modulating light-shuttering methods. The company's aim is to demonstrate a device that can switch quickly from being a solid-state white-light source to being transparent for daylight transmission.

The agreement, which is part of the Energy Efficient Building Technologies Funding Opportunity Announcement, includes $100,000 in funding from the department and a $30,000 cost-share contribution from Universal.
