A case study performed at University College Hospital London documenting the successful use of Kent, UK-based Michelson Diagnostics Ltd.’s VivoSight OCT scanner for in vivo mapping of nonmelanoma skin cancer has been published in the March 2011 issue of Photodiagnosis and Photodynamic Therapy. The benefit of photodynamic therapy (PDT) of nonmelanoma skin cancers over conventional surgery is that it is noninvasive and avoids scarring, important because this type of skin cancer frequently occurs on the face. Because no tissue is removed for analysis in the PDT procedure, it can be difficult for clinicians to be sure that they have successfully treated the tumor. The case study shows that this problem could be solved with the use of the VivoSight laser scanner to image skin before, during and after PDT.
