Born of fundamental quantum optics research at the University of Vienna, Crystalline Mirror Solutions (CMS) offers a ground-breaking optical coating technology that is currently redefining the standards of laser-based optical precision measurement. Our proprietary crystalline coating process enables the integration of single-crystal semiconductor heterostructures onto high quality optical substrates, with both curved and planar surfaces possible. As we employ direct bonding, no adhesives or intermediate films are used. Thus, this process allows for separate optimization of the host substrate and epitaxial multilayer, enabling unprecedented improvement in the thermal noise performance of high-reflectivity end mirrors for optical reference cavities and high-stability interferometers. Immediate applications include the development of cavity-stabilized laser systems operating in the range from 900-4000 nm.

The precise measurement of time and frequency is a key element of both fundamental scientific exploration and state-of-the-art industrial applications. Advances in precision interferometry have enabled the realization of ultranarrow-linewidth lasers for high resolution spectroscopy and optical atomic clocks. However, the multilayer mirrors at the heart of these technologies, typically realized via ion-beam sputtering (IBS), have now reached a fundamental limit, constrained by their excess mechanical damping and thus thermal (Brownian) noise. Compared with existing technology, our crystalline coatings establish a new paradigm that essentially eliminates the long-standing limitation caused by Brownian noise. This advancement immediately paves the way for the next generation of optical precision measurement systems, as well as a wealth of new industrial applications.

In addition to a significant reduction in mechanical damping and the resulting thermal noise, our crystalline coating process enables the realization of high-reflectivity multilayer mirrors with ppm-levels of optical losses (scatter + absorption) into the mid-IR (currently out to a wavelength of 4 µm), for use in cavity-ringdown spectroscopy or general power buildup cavities in this highly sought after wavelength window for optical sensing. Moreover, the direct bonding technique and high thermal conductivity of our coatings, up to 50-80 W/(m*K), compared with <1 W/(m*K) in IBS films, opens up new possibilities in the design of high power and ultrafast laser systems. Finally, the use of direct bandgap semiconductors as the coating material enables a plethora of interesting electro-optic and nonlinear phenomena (such as optical gain, etc.) to be realized with our mirror structures.
