Light Pipes and Homogenizers

Light Pipes and HomogenizersIRD Glass specializes in high precision light homogenizers and light pipes. Light pipes and homogenizers are designed to smooth out the irregularities inherent in a raw non-uniform beam of light to create a more uniform and evenly distributed beam of output energy. Homogenizers and light pipes are typically designed using specific optical materials that will vary depending upon your specific needs and requirements; materials include, but are not limited to, fused silica, nBK7, and sapphire.

IRD manufactures traditional square and round homogenizers, as well as more exotic rectangular, hexagonal, and octagonal homogenizers, including straight and tapered designs. Because homogenizers take advantage of the law of Total Internal Reflection (TIR), a component with very sharp and clean edges without bevels will provide a better output beam. IRD uses proprietary processes and tooling to maintain very sharp edges and pristine surface quality. This results in maximum efficiency from the optic, while avoiding hot spots and failure modes in high power laser applications.

IRD makes components for many different types of applications; from high power laser systems requiring laser quality material, 5/3x0.016 surfaces and 1/10th wave optical flatness, all the way to commercial surface quality and flatness components used for lighting or illumination applications. Homogenizers and light pipes are often designed with optical faces that are perpendicular to the lengths of the light pipe, but sometimes the designs that IRD build call for faces built at a precise angle to the walls, such as a Brewster angle when working with polarized light. Light pipes and beam homogenizers are used across many markets and applications, from noninvasive medical analytical devices to high power industrial lasers to microchip manufacturing, wherever the homogeneity and uniformity of a light beam is beneficial.
