DBR Laser with Beam Correction
Photonics MarketplacePhotodigm DBR lasers are now available with integrated beam correction. A Virtual Point Source (VPS) microlens inside the package corrects astigmatism and reduces fast axis divergence resulting in a user friendly near circular beam. This increases coupling efficiency/transmitted power and improves performance for spectroscopy, metrology and biomedical applications. Most edge emitting laser diodes have a divergent output beam with elliptical cross-section and certain level of astigmatism in the slow and fast axes. A custom designed micro-cylindrical lens can effectively create a virtual point source, circularize the emitting beam and reduce the astigmatism between axes.
The VPS microlens is attached directly to the submount inside the package, in close proximity to the laser facet allowing the assembly to fit inside standard form factor packages. The output laser beam from the window of the package has a near circular Gaussian profile with beam divergence of around 4 to 8 degrees FWHM full angle, in both slow and fast axes. The beam is corrected for astigmatism and can therefore be easily focused or collimated by the user using a single off-the-shelf aspheric lens external to the package. Multiple lenses and anamorphic prism pairs are no longer required. For applications requiring a collimated beam the aspheric lens is selected based on the desired beam waist diameter of the collimated beam. For applications requiring coupling into fiber, the aspheric lens is chosen based on the mode-field-diameter of the fiber.
Photodigm DBR lasers with VPS lens are currently available in a Mercury™ or TO-8 package in various wavelengths and power levels. Custom packages are available upon request.
