Dual-band IR Filters and AR Coatings

Photonics MarketplaceReynard Dual-band Filters and CoatingsForward looking infrared (FLIR) camera systems continue to grow in both popularity and sophistication. Detectors are improving in performance and resolution, which is pushing the demand for higher performing optical filters. Reynard Corporation has pushed the capability of both infrared filters and anti-reflection (AR) coatings. Infrared systems that need to discern two (or more) wavelength bands can save in space, weight, and cost by combing optical path functionality into fewer elements. Since many detectors are broadband, a dual-band filter is used to allow transmission of only the multiple wavelength bands of interest, while simultaneously providing blocking of other wavelengths. No longer is it necessary to perform these functionalities in distinct optical elements.

A complete optical system requires multiple optical elements in the light path to correct for chromatic aberrations, or to provide specific functionality, such as the above mentioned filtering. However, Fresnel loss on each uncoated optical surface greatly reduces the amount of light that hits a detector. Adding AR coatings to these surfaces recovers most of this loss. A high performance infrared, dual-band, anti-reflection coating tuned to the transmission spectral bands of a dual-band filter allows for the maximum amount of electromagnetic radiation (ie. IR ‘light’) in those bands to reach the detector. The result is a system with greatly improved sensitivity.

Infrared dual-band filters and AR coatings work together and can be designed on a variety of optical substrate types and shapes, including curved surfaces. The performance can be tuned to specific bands of interest, including laser lines. Reynard Corporation is dedicated to keeping infrared optical coating performance ahead of the capabilities of infrared detectors.
