SCANLAB, Pulsar Photonics Extend Collaboration for Scan Solutions

Photonics Spectra
Apr 2022
SCANLAB GmbH and Pulsar Photonics GmbH formalized a cooperation agreement for the development and distribution of more highly integrated laser scan systems. In addition to collaborating with Pulsar on the development of the “photonic drill engine (PDE)” for laser micro-drilling at a high throughput rate, the agreement will enable SCANLAB to supply a range of beam-shaping systems and other customized solutions.

Stemming from the enhanced collaboration, the company said it will expand its product range for micro material processing, and offer new solutions aimed at improving users’ productivity and processing quality.

Over the course of the drill engine development project, the two businesses will jointly develop a multibeam tool for laser material processing. The technology is to be suited for use in the electronics industry, such as for laser drilling circuit boards to increase drilling rates for high-density applications.

SCANLAB and Pulsar — the latter of which introduced a microscan extension product for laser processing near the submicron limit Jan. 25 — have collaborated on the design and development of scan solutions for microprocessing since 2019. The companies specifically partner on development and sales for higher integrated scanning solutions for micromachining. In taking on joint responsibility for the distribution of highly integrated laser scan systems, SCANLAB said it will be able to provide its own customer base with additional, integrated solutions starting this month.

SCANLAB said that the market for ultrashort pulse laser applications continues to grow, with the most significant challenges involving the ability to achieve increases in throughput. The company believes parallelization of laser processes using multibeam systems can help to overcome this challenge.

In addition to the microscan extension product from Pulsar, the partnership will focus on additional commercial optical module solutions for laser materials processing that are part of the Pulsar portfolio. These include the MultiBeamScanner, the FlexibleBeamShaper, and the Beam Alignment module.
