BELLINGHAM, Wash., Jan. 14, 2021 — SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, announced 57 members as fellows of the society for 2021. Fellows are members of the society who have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics, and imaging. Since the society’s inception in 1955, nearly 1600 SPIE members have become fellows.

Notable inductees this year hail from Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Israel, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, and the United States. This year’s cohort also encompasses particularly robust industry representation, SPIE said in a press release, including Optimax Systems’ Jessica DeGroote Nelson, Grand Drone Solutions’ Barbara Grant, Intel’s Anna Lio, KLA’s John Robinson, Edmund Optics’ Robert Edmund, Tokyo Electron America’s Mark Somervell, and OptiGrate’s Vadim Smirnov.

“Our society’s fellows represent the technical range, diversity, and ethos of SPIE,” said Michelle Stock, chair of the SPIE Fellows Committee and senior OEM business development manager at TOPTICA Photonics. “I’m delighted that we continue to diversify our fellow membership across geography, gender, and vocational training. With our 57 new fellows, we celebrate the innovative technologies and scientific breakthroughs developed and generated across the optics and photonics industry by scientists and engineers in academia, industry, and government. It’s been my pleasure to work with the Fellows Committee to honor these new SPIE fellows on their contributions to SPIE and the photonics community, and it’s my pleasure to recognize each one of them for their cumulative and ongoing professional successes.”

New fellows are acknowledged during the SPIE symposium of their choice throughout the year. The complete list of 2021 SPIE fellows with photos is available online, along with a list of all SPIE fellows, nomination criteria, and the SPIE fellows nomination form.
