Murty interferometer

A form of shearing interferometer that contains a simple wedged (plane-parallel) glass plate with a nonzero optical path difference to create interference between split optical wavefronts. The interferometer must be used with nearly monochromatic sources, and has applications in the testing of lenses, spherical and paraboloidal mirrors as well as parallel plates. The Murty interferometer has specific uses for the determination of homogeneity of optical materials; refractive index measurements of glasses and liquids and simple lenses; measurements involving radii of curvature and the location of cardinal points for optical elements; checking laser beam collimation; determining the optical power of ophthalmic lenses; measuring the birefringence of optical materials; measuring the thermal expansion coefficient of metallic bars; and, measuring the optical distortion in transparencies or glass windows. See shearing interferometer.
