acousto-optic tunable filter: A bulk crystalline optic which permits the propagation of light through a volume of index altered material. The variation in refractive index along the material volume is due to a piezoelectric transducer with acoustic absorber. The index grating produced by the piezoelectric transducer permits the diffraction of a transmitted beam with ordinary and extraordinary components.
