geometric image

The position and shape of the image of a point source, as predicted by geometric optics alone. The geometric image is to be differentiated from the diffraction image, which is determined from considerations of both physical and geometric optics. With completely corrected objectives, the geometric image of two points is again two points, but the actual image or the diffraction image may or may not suggest the presence of an object comprised of two points or two minute particles.
